>Happy Fourth of July

(God of our Fathers – The Army Hymn)

God of our fathers, whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies
Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.

Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast,
Be Thou our Ruler, Guardian, Guide and Stay,
Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.

From war’s alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
Lead us from night to never ending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.

  1. >The hymn was written for the centennial of the ideal strived for by Christians. It was not commissioned by the Army and so whould not be seen as propaganda. My choice of it was aspiring, not descriptive. I would be lying if I said I had no reservations about what has happened in Iraq. Yet, I also have respect for those in uniform (which includes my brother-in-law) and Romans 13:1 and 1 Pet 2:13 tells us we should hold allegence to the govenment. Yet, if our nation does not meet the standards of the hymn, that is not the hymn’s fault.

  2. >And if it’s not the “Army staff” which must be defied, but Congress and/or the President? What if the Army’s Christians (the non-SBC’ers, at least) had sung this hymn, heeded it’s words, and joined their churches in recognizing the Iraq War as not a just war and refused to participate? That such a thing is unthinkable shows both the presumptuousness of the hymn’s claims and the idolatry our allegiance to the state really is.

  3. >Then he would be living by the principles of the Army hymn, even if in defiance of the Army staff.

  4. >”Be Thou our Ruler, Guardian, Guide and Stay,Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.”BS. What would happen to a soldier who sings this and actually lived it, refusing to fight in a war that was deemed unjust by the Church, for example?
