>Today John McCain came to New Jersey and held a town hall meeting. I try to meet politicians whenever I get a chance so naturally I jumped at the opportunity to go today. I met Dick Cheney when he stopped by the area back in 2004 and I also met President George W. Bush at McGuire AFB around the same time.
There were a few warm up acts before Senator McCain finally took the stage. Senator Joe Lieberman, former New Jersey governor Tom Kean, my congressman Jim Saxton, and some other local politicians all spoke for a while. Lindsey Graham was also in attendance but did not speak.
Finally John McCain came out (with Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode playing in the background) and spoke for a while. Some of the issues he talked about were the war in Iraq, gas prices and the need for energy independence, and the Supreme Court’s outrageous ruling yesterday that gives habeas corpus rights to enemy combatants.
After speaking for a little while he took questions from the audience. I was pleasantly surprised by this format. You could tell that they weren’t just pre-selected people. McCain randomly picked people from the crowd. He answered questions that dealt with things like funding for schools, health care for vets, immigration, energy policies, and Osama bin Laden. John McCain did a good job answering questions. Town hall meetings are definitely a good format for him. He looks much more comfortable and relaxed taking questions from a crowd than when he is delivering a prepared speech.
There were reports that there was going to be protesters at the event but I didn’t see a single one (which I was happy about). Overall it was a good time.
Below is a picture from the town hall meeting today. You can actually see half of me in this picture. I circled it in red. Look to the bottom left.
